ABSTRACT
In December 1845 the Religious Tract Society (RTS) launched a new publishing venture: ‘The Monthly Volume, occasionally illustrated with engravings, and containing one hundred and ninety-two pages, in a good, bold type. Sixpence, in fancy paper covers. Tenpence, in cloth boards, gilt edges’ (Fig. 6.1). Each new issue was to appear on the first of the month. This publication clearly had periodicity, but was it a periodical? The 6d. Monthly Volumes. The covers are stiff green paper, printed in black ink on the front. The volumes measure 8.0cm × 13.5cm × 1.0cm.
