ABSTRACT
Jean Richard has long been identified with the study of Christian missions to the East. This brief essay may be more meaningful by reason of its inclusion in a festschrift dedicated to this distinguished French historian and valued colleague in the study of the crusades, whose contributions go far beyond anything I could say here.
