ABSTRACT
The raising of a ghost has always been regarded as the supreme achievement of any magician – whether a self-confessed conjuror or not. In antiquity these spectral apparitions were usually produced by a combination of mirrors and lenses, often focussing their image upon a cloud of smoke rising from a burning brazier.
