ABSTRACT
The history of globalisation has been one of technological change, mostly comparatively recent, and colonisation in one form or another, from Genghis Khan to the Scramble for Africa in the later nineteenth century. The idea of cultural and financial imperialism is not new but is often treated as if it were, forgetting the complex notions of difference and the isolation of communities, and ignoring the slowness of change.
