ABSTRACT

The San people are the oldest peoples of Southern Africa, tracing their history back some forty thousand years and numbering about 100 000 today. We resent being classified in European anthropology and pejoratively viewed as ‘Bushmen’ by most white people. We are among the earliest cultures of Africa and are proud of this far-reaching heritage. Our closeness to the natural world and our Creator ought not be construed as ‘backward’ and ‘primitive’ as so much of the Western world characterizes us. We are human beings like any other, yet we are distinctive in that we have lived on Mother Earth as people longer than most others.
