ABSTRACT

Most of us, whether we are palaeographers or students of Byzantine civilisation in a broader sense, have to face from time to time the problems of the revival of letters that occurred in the 9th century, for it was then that the frontiers of both the classical and the Early Christian heritage were established for the Greek world. The starting point for our investigations remains Paul Lemerle's Le premier humanisme byzantin (1971). It is as a complement to that excellent book that my comments are intended.
