Arms, Armour and Warfare in the Eleventh Century

In this year which marks the nine-hundredth anniversary of the death of William, I can think of no more appropriate manner to begin a paper on eleventh-century warfare, and more specifically the arms and armour employed, than by quoting that stirring passage by William of Poitiers, describing the Conqueror's exploits on the field of Hastings. ¹
