ABSTRACT

Although the origins of peace studies can in large part be traced to European peace research, much of the development of the field, in terms of teaching programmes, has taken place in North America, particularly in the USA. In this chapter I examine how Peace Studies emerged as a new field of study in the USA. its core concerns and distinguishing characteristics, and some of the challenges to its development. I also examine different models and types of programme development, and the contribution that Peace Studies can make to the creation of a culture of peace.
