ABSTRACT

In some jobs fiddles are carried on with the collusion of management; yet in others fiddlers are ruthlessly and swiftly punished. In some fiddling is organised and carried out by individuals in isolation from their workmates; in others it requires the co-operation of a group. And while fiddling is seen by some employers as an incentive, almost a part of wages, and therefore tacitly welcomed and even encouraged, some undoubtedly occurs because of resentment … it is a way of hitting out at the boss, the company, the system, or the state.
