ABSTRACT

Although Johann Gottfried von Herder (1744–1803) was much read in the 1830s and the 1840s, today he can hardly be regarded as à la mode or fashionable. Few if any had been so influential or so much discussed during their own lifetime; however, he faded out of the public eye already at the beginning of the nineteenth century, a disappearance which began in the 1790s while he was still living.
