ABSTRACT

The geographical boundaries of this study are determined by the sites and regions discussed in the chapters of this volume (Figure 10.1). The Marmara region forms the southeastern limit; the northern Aegean Sea and the rivers discharging into it as well as the islands opposite constitute the southern boundary. The western limit is defined by the line described by the Axios/Vardar, Morava and Tisza Rivers; the northern by the upper courses of the Mureş, Someş and Olt Rivers; and the eastern by the Southern Bug. The northwesternmost limit at the confluence of the rivers Mureş and Tisza is already exceeding the boundaries posed within this volume – yet, we refrained from arbitrarily separating sites attributed to the Criş culture. The Körös sites farther north and the Starčevo sites farther west will be part of a future study.
