ABSTRACT
Community-based ecotourism (CBET) is believed to improve the sustainability and quality of life for people living in the local area. However, most research into local empowerment suggests this form of tourism development is too simplified and generalised. Place-based studies are necessary to account for the specific influences of supranational institutions, governmental organisations, NGOs, tourists and local entrepreneurs, each of which greatly affect the success or otherwise.
