ABSTRACT

Values clarification is today widely used in drug education programs in the United States [1]. With the recognition that the mere dissemination of information about drugs is grossly inadequate to influence drug-using behavior; values clarification has gained increasing acceptance among drug educators [2]. Simon and deSherbinin, strong advocates of the approach, have readily endorsed it as a viable method for influencing drug “use.” They content [3, p. 679]:

… Drug educators across the country increasingly use values clarification techniques. Drug educators report reaching students by examining their values. Instead of focusing exclusively on drugs, they involve young people in looking at their total lives. The young discover what they prize and cherish and begin to think about the consequences of their actions. Eventually, they learn techniques for examining the harder issues of their lives, such as whether or not to use drugs…
