ABSTRACT

Originating in the teachings of Siddhārtha Gautama (or Gautama Buddha; c. 563 BCE/480 BCE–c. 483 BCE/400 BCE), over the past two decades mindfulness practice has been secularized and has grown in popularity in the fields of social work, psychology, health and mental health. To date, most of the research and writings have been in psychology and medicine. This chapter focuses primarily on research and publications by social work scholars, researchers, educators and practitioners. It highlights the unique contributions of social work in integrating mindfulness into practice on multiple levels to bring about individual and social change.
