ABSTRACT
Turning the pages in a glossy magazine featuring luxury products, one likely will come across an image of a craftsperson carefully cutting a suit, trimming the thread on a handbag, or polishing a shoe. Invariably they will be portrayed as wearing clean and tidy clothes in a carefully staged and pristine workshop deemed worthy of producing uniquely handcrafted artefacts made of exquisite materials. However, in reality, these artefacts may begin their life in lowly spaces never intended to be seen by future owners. These workshops often are hidden away, subterranean spaces that protect those who work in them from prying eyes while toiling at their craft.
