ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the synergies between cognitive experimental pragmatics and audiovisual translation, shedding light on the intricacies of undertaking this particular type of interdisciplinary, cross-cultural research. In particular, certain methodological challenges of investigating the reception of film dialogue meaning by actual audiences will be teased out. What is more, the chapter will propose and illustrate ways of responding to such key challenges drawing on a study (Desilla, 2009, 2014) on the comprehension of implicatures in Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001) and Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason (2004) and their Greek subtitled versions.
