ABSTRACT

In your mind’s eye, place yourself in this scenario. You have a dear friend, someone from back home, from your childhood. At school you diverted yourselves from lessons by surreptitiously exchanging notes, full of in-jokes and just-us secrets. You took innumerable photographs of one another and of the two of you together. Since growing up and moving further apart geographically, you have maintained contact and have saved all of your communications, for such is the importance of the relationship to you both. Now well into adulthood, you store all of these memories, the legacy of a lifelong friendship, in a large shoebox.
