ABSTRACT

Season 2 of the podcasting sensation, Serial, is an investigation of the strange case of Army Private Bowe Bergdahl. In episode 11, “Present for Duty,” Andy and Sondra Andrews, informed for five years that their son, Darryn, a Second Lieutenant, had been killed by a rocket-propelled grenade on a mission to arrest a Talibani in Afghanistan, learn that he actually lost his life while searching for the AWOL Bergdahl. Mrs. Andrews recalled, “You know, we’d kind of fit the story into our life. We had, uh, talked about it. And now all of that was gone. We had a whole new story to get used to” (“Serial Transcript Episode 11: Present for Duty”; https://https://serialpodcast.org/season-two/11/present-for-duty/transcript">https://serialpodcast.org/season-two/11/present-for-duty/transcript). The experience of the Andrews family illustrates the roles of meaning making and communication about death and grief in the evolution of relationships with the deceased.
