ABSTRACT

The killing of 18-year-old Michael Brown and 43-year-old Eric Garner in the summer of 2014 sparked a wave of protest across the country. Spurred on by the killings, protests about racist and violent policing tactics were frequent, and the phrase, “Black Lives Matter,” the rallying cry of this new movement, was on the lips and minds of college students nationwide. Student activists took Black Lives Matter onto their campuses, using it to inspire programs, community service, and most commonly, on-campus protests in the form of die-ins, marches, and protests.
