ABSTRACT

This chapter is a brief overview of the monumental and domestic architecture of the Bactria-Margiana Archaeological Culture (BMAC), as well as of the building materials and construction techniques used in Margiana and Bactria during the Bronze Age. It gives a general description of all the BMAC sites studied up to now on the territory of Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, and Uzbekistan. An attempt is made to trace the origins of the planning structures of some of them. Parallels and possible links with other synchronous sites of the Middle East, as well as the influence of the BMAC architectural traditions on later architectural plans in Central Asia are mentioned.
