ABSTRACT

This chapter interviews the internationally renowned dance practitioner and scholar Dr. Kariamu Welsh (Mama Kariamu), the creator of the 40-year-old Umfundalai technique that she explains is a “contemporary African dance technique which draws upon key movements from different African ethnic groups and many cultures in Africa and the [African] Diaspora.” Dr. Welsh’s work has captivated national and international audiences. She is the founder and artistic director of Kariamu & Company: Traditions, a touring dance company that focuses on preserving African Diaspora dance traditions. She is also the author of numerous books including African Dance.
