ABSTRACT

The emergence of the performance group, Postmodern African Homosexuals (Pomo Afro Homos) signaled an important era of Black queer theatre and performance. This chapter situates the political and social importance of both the group and the historical period they emerged from. In the group’s pieces Fierce Love Stories: From Black Gay Life and Dark Fruit, they tackled LGBT racism, AIDS, religion, and sexuality in a bold and unapologetic way. Pomo Afro Homos was critical in defining the voices of Black queer men navigating race, gender, and sexuality during the height of the AIDS epidemic.
