ABSTRACT
At the end of the last century Papua New Guinea was colonized by Germany and the United Kingdom. The arrival of colonial administrations, the introduction of other values as well as increasing mobility, exposed the local populations to strong and continuous external influences which caused a gradual breaking up of social and cultural structures. All these changes also had an effect on the artwork of the country and consequently, many traditional artistic forms, having lost their function and meaning, disappeared.
