ABSTRACT

Henry Dickinson was one of those rare historians whose works have not dated. Although there have been many developments since he wrote his last paper and although there have beer considerable changes in style, emphasis and approach, Dickinson's work has hardly been superseded It is therefore rather as a footnote to his favourite subject, the history of the steam engine, that. now offer this paper. May I add that I am most honoured and grateful to have been asked to do so.
