ABSTRACT

Manu NNa’s stage entrance immediately catches the eye: his black outfit contrasts against a shaggy brown overcoat, and he sports thick rimmed glasses, a long, thick necklace, and unruly blue hair. His comedy set almost immediately turns focus toward a favorite topic: his love life. “I met a man,” he confesses. “You know those questions that come up at first—what do you like to do? How big are you? So I ask him, hey, what do you do? He says: “I’m a farmer.” I said farmer? I said “You fuck cows, so surely you won’t have any problem fucking me, right?” 1 (Manu NNa, “Rodrigo” n.d.). Later he recounts going to a family reunion, yet again without a boyfriend, only to have his uncle be thankful that that means they will be able to continue their sexual relationship. He tells the audience: “The truth is that I’m a big whore. I’m such a whore that I buy the morning after pill at Costco.” The audience roars with laughter, breaking into applause. In his 12-minute set, the comedian talks about scary movies, his habit of sleeping with his cousins, riffs on Mexico’s annual telethon, and recounts seeing via Facebook that an ex is now engaged. He confesses that he misses the relationship, or at least part of it: “I miss sleeping with him the most. Because when we were fucking and he came he would punch me, so I miss him a lot.” 2
