ABSTRACT
Members of news audience do not always have the relevant background knowledge to understand the significance of news events in foreign countries and the global arena at large. One method for the news media to highlight the newsworthiness of and enhance audience interests in foreign news is domestication, i.e., the application of local frames of references or the articulation of the local or national relevance of international news stories such that the domestic audience is more likely to find the foreign news events interesting and relevant (Cohen, 2002; Cohen, Levy, Roeh, & Gurevitch, 1996). As a result of domestication, the same news event is often covered substantially differently in the news around the world. One event often leads to multiple domesticated news stories.
