ABSTRACT

It is said that when Bion first published his A Memoir of the Future, his fellow analysts wondered if he had gone mad. Indeed, the contrast with the content and formal aspects of his preceding works is impressive and disconcerting. My readings of Memoir share this initial reaction of awe: my repeated attempts to get through it invariably failed. Over and over again, the experience of reading Memoir evoked in me the experience aroused by some works of contemporary art: perplexity, amazement, displeasure, irritation, rejection and … an urge towards thinking.
