In normative and applied ethics, thought experiments are frequently used in debates on questions such as: Are we morally obliged to give large amounts to poverty relief? Can the number of lives saved be ethically decisive? Is torture ever morally permissible? At the heart of every thought experiment is a scenario with a question.
