The question of what justifies the imposition of criminal punishment has fascinated moral and legal philosophers for generations. Is it retribution for a wrong done? The deterrence of future wrongdoing? The rehabilitation of the wrongdoer? The expression of society’s outrage over the wrongdoing? Some combination of the four?
