ABSTRACT

This chapter overviews how posthumanism and new materialism has been taken up in masculinity studies. Under the three headings of “Transcendence”, “Man Plus Metaphors” and “Posthumanism and new materialism in masculinity studies” it is demonstrated how masculinity, can be and has been theorised and studied in relation to different entanglements of human–non-human; machinic–somatic; culture–nature; material–organic. It is further shown how a cyborgic paradigm has been truly important for the conceptual as well as biological evolution of Man and masculinity. In addition, it is also shown that the emancipatory promise of an egalitarian posthuman ontology is ambivalent in relation to masculinity and a future posthumanity.
