ABSTRACT

Educating in the fullest sense of the term means the shaping of both mental and sensori-motor capacities. In contemporary Western society, one becomes educated by entering an institutional system so that this system will assist in the growth of these abilities and give direction and form to them. Today, schools are seen by most people as the main institution which educates. Any time a new study reveals that children are deficient in certain areas of knowledge, or are lacking in skills, it is the schools which are called upon to correct this deficit. On the contrary, it can be argued that various institutional arrangements promote certain kinds of learning, and that no one institution is capable of educating all the capacities of a person.
