ABSTRACT

In this chapter we wish to set the scene for the findings from the Voices of Social Work through the Troubles study (British Association of Social Workers Northern Ireland (BASW (NI)), 2019) that are presented in Chapter 4. The study has been four years in the making and the process of bringing together such a sensitive issue has necessitated a lengthy period of ethical approval both within the academic and employment settings, and it is a credit to the people involved that this study is now presented in this book. We wanted to learn from social workers, some of whom put their lives on the line to help others, what motivated them and how they coped; it was also important to know about what strategies were being used to deal with the needs of clients in such unusual and dangerous circumstances.
