ABSTRACT
To provide a cultural context for the next chapter, this section is offered to assist the reader’s understanding. During the communist times of the Soviet Union (1922–1991), Russians experienced a state-imposed atheism and a deconstruction of religious institutions (Evans & Northmore-Ball, 2012). Accordingly, religious practice of all denominations was severely restricted and people could not openly practice their faiths.
