ABSTRACT

Hospice care in Aotearoa/New Zealand is provided free to all people with a life limiting illness. The majority of medical care is government funded with social and family care funded by individual hospices. People may self refer though most are referred through medical personnel or agencies. With seemingly minimal barriers to the referral process we could hope that hospice service is accessible to all, however recent studies indicate there is often a gap for Māori, our indigenous people, at end of life due to a lack of cultural understanding (Moeke-Maxwell et al, 2014; Slater et al, 2015) and this is consistent with the experience of many indigenous peoples (Duggleby et al, 2015).
