ABSTRACT
“Do we kill time, or does time ultimately kill us?” (Liccione, 2018). Grave and immediate risk to self and others, such as homicide, along with additional mental health needs, detains many men into old age in one of three high secure hospitals (HSH) in the UK. The psychiatric hospital detains patients under the Mental Health Act (1983, amended in 2007) who fulfil the criteria for “treatment under conditions of high security on account of their dangerous, violent or criminal propensities” (NHS Act 2006), are classified as having a mental illness, intellectual disability disorder and/or a personality or psychopathic disorder, and referred from the criminal justice system, the courts, prisons, or mental health services.
