ABSTRACT

Art therapy is beneficial for a variety of hospitalized patients (Bucciarelli, 2016; Anand, 2016; Councill and Phlegar, 2013). However, sometimes traditional artmaking can feel intimidating, difficult to use, or even unrelatable. In these cases, art therapists have another tool in their toolbox: tablet computers. In this chapter I outline the therapeutic strengths of tablets according to ten years of clinical experience integrating electronicbased work into art therapy sessions. Within this work, my approach to art therapy has primarily originated from a humanistic theoretical framework (Garai, 2001). This chapter specifically focuses on tablets as appropriate and viable art tools for children, teenagers, and young adults who are hospitalized with chronic and life-limiting illnesses.
