ABSTRACT
This paper is a preliminary survey of the Asian (or Indian) population of Nairobi with special reference to the distribution and use of languages in the Asian community. My fieldwork to date has largely confirmed the findings of others, notably those who contributed to Dharam Ghai’s Portrait of a Minority, 1 so much of what follows will be familiar ground to some.
