ABSTRACT
Religious life in large Indian cities operates in many ways. Among these are the proliferation of places of worship, small and large; the growth of new religious movements; emerging relations between political parties and religious groups; old and new tensions among religious communities and factions; and various forms of religious spectacle, performance and celebration. These phenomena might be described as religious in a straightforward sense.
