ABSTRACT

Though he never wrote a treatise dedicated to the law, Hume comments extensively on the topic throughout his works. He offers an account of the nature and origins of our sense of justice and presents the law as a system of conventions to which people adhere in order to reap the benefits of social cooperation. He demonstrates the essential role an equitable legal system rule plays in a modern commercial society. And, in his historical works, he explains how English law evolved into a stable and predictable system that is able to protect the people’s essential liberties.
