ABSTRACT

This chapter analyses the Malayalam film Ee.Ma.Yau. (2018) so as to critically investigate the question of caste within the Christian community in Kerala. The film depicts the lives of the Catholic shore community from a nuanced perspective of caste discrimination that prevails in Kerala’s society and largely remains obscure in the public space. Through a closed reading, this chapter tries to introspect the location, events, and characters in the film to identify the continuous process of contestation against the normative projection of caste. The Catholic shore community or better known as the Latin Catholics belongs to an ethnic community that possesses a syncretic culture, religious identity, and caste consciousness due to their inherent relationship with the marine ecosystem.
