ABSTRACT
This chapter describes how students employ certain practices through their participation in extracurricular activities (ECAs) in ways that enhance their sense of agency and belonging. Students experience a strong sense of purpose related to experiencing a sense of belonging as well as displaying competence for audiences; for example, through playing in a band. Students also acquire use of certain norms associated with acquiring languaging actions employed in certain ECAs; for example, norms for giving speeches as a member of a speech team. Students also adopt practices related to enacting their identities. For example, through their participation in performing in a band or giving speeches, they are able to display competence to others in ways that bolster their identities.
