ABSTRACT
In any language shift, some individuals will be in the vanguard, some will hold the middle ground and some will lag behind. Where the subordinate language is associated with a stigmatised group, language choices are inevitably charged. Anyone who adopts the dominant language will be viewed as something of a traitor to his original group.
