ABSTRACT

I have secured the appointment, received my clothing and accoutrements, obtained suitable apartments, and am now ready for the fray. About 9.30pm the following night, dressed in a tight fitting tunic with a broad belt round my waist, a heavy lamp hanging on my left side, a thick piece of wood in the pocket on the inside of my right trouser leg, a heavy helmet on my head, and a cloth cape over my shoulder, I set out on my journey to the Town Hall. On my arrival there I was shown into a large room full of men seated ready for duty. Some of them were very big men, tall and stout, some about the same build as myself, and others even less. Some of them were reading, some smoking, some cracking jokes and others trimming their lamps. I arranged my snips, 1 cape, and stave as they did, trimmed my lamp and made ready.
