ABSTRACT

This chapter discuss the perennial question related to the fiction of Iris Murdoch: is she a philosophical novelist? It discusses the historical literary critical background to the question, as well as bringing together major work from the twenty-first century on this issue—most notably from Miles Leeson and Niklas Forsberg—as well as exploring how it might be investigated in relation to three of Murdoch’s key novels: Under the Net, The Black Prince, and The Green Knight. Although Murdoch claimed throughout her career that she was not a philosophical novelist, the conclusion of this chapter is that the answer is not so simple.
