ABSTRACT
This chapter, based on a literature review, presents an overview of the translation and interpretation between Libras (Brazilian Sign Language) and Portuguese in the legal sphere in Brazil. The theme is still incipient in the country, lacking fundamental notions, parameters, and guidelines in the performance of professionals in this space. The text highlights urgent needs such as: certification, specialised training, creation of protocols and professional guidance documents, among others. It is worth highlighting the role and contributions of linguistic policies carried out regarding Libras, especially concerning Law no. 10,436/2002 and Decree no. 5,626/2005. Another important highlight refers to the Extension Programme TILSJUR. The actions and research carried out by this program have contributed to making the theme visible and alerting law operators, deaf communities, translators, and interpreters of sign languages to the urgency of the theme.
