ABSTRACT

Sir—The position and wants of the wives and children, widows and orphans, of our gallant soldiers and sailors have at length been placed so strikingly before the public eye that every right-minded man hails the establishment and collection of funds for their relief. All differences of opinion as to the sound basis or probable usefulness of the various funds are forgotten in the importance of immediate action on behalf of the suffering claimants, and the established and already most useful associations for the soldiers’ and sailors’ wives and families—the various orphan asylums, the Cambridge and Wellington testimonials, the Sick and Wounded Fund, and the Soldiers’ Friend Society—have not yet so exhausted public charity but that additional thousands are pouring in to the Patriotic Fund recently founded by her Majesty’s Ministers.
