ABSTRACT

An Irishwoman, named Catherine Williams, the wife of a soldier of the 50th Foot, applied to Mr. Ingham for relief. She carried a fine baby in her arms, and had a little girl about seven or eight years of age clinging to her. She stated that her husband had gone out with his regiment to Constantinople, and that being left destitute with her two children, she had walked up from Liverpool to London, and endured great privations on the road. She expected to find her father, who would have assisted them, but on inquiring for him ascertained that he was dead. Under these circumstances she had respectfully to implore a little bit of bread for the wife and children of a soldier who had gone abroad to fight the battles of his country.
