ABSTRACT

Charles Branton was a semi-literate gunner serving in the 4th Company of the 12th Battalion of the Royal Artillery. He took part in the second, third, fourth, fifth, and final bombardments of the city of Sevastopol. Branton was slightly wounded in a minor action on 30 August 1855, but seems to have survived the war. His spelling has been retained in the letters to his wife below, and punctuation added for clarity.
