ABSTRACT

Numerous letters home from soldiers were published by newspapers during the Crimean conflict. The soldier-authors of the first two letters below served in the 88th Connaught Rangers. Private Patrick Lyons was killed during the battle of Alma on 20 September 1854. Sergeant Thomas Prendible (not Peindiville as printed in the newspaper) was wounded in the final assault on the Redan on 8 September 1855, but seems to have survived. The third soldier whose letter appeared, John Doody, served in the 23rd (Royal Welch) Fusiliers, and also seems to have survived the war.
