ABSTRACT

Frederick Newman was a Hospital Sergeant serving in the 97th (Earl of Ulster’s) Regiment of Foot. He had enlisted in 1844, and served almost exclusively overseas in the Mediterranean, Jamaica, and North America. Newman arrived in the Crimea in November 1854, and on 14 December died of fever, probably cholera. Newman disliked being a soldier and had been saving to purchase his discharge. In the event, he used his savings to buy his brother Charlie’s release from the army in hopes that the latter would succeed in a civilian career. Although Frederick did not live to see it, Charlie did establish a successful tailoring firm.
